In the first part of this series (linked here) we have dealt with various aspects of electric sauna heating. In our previous article, we discussed how the overwhelming majority of electric sauna heaters always have the same basic design.

The model offered in the UK, the electric sauna stove Harvia the Wall SW90 9kW, is probably one of the most popular wall boxes on the market. The device contains a stone in a lockable lid that traps the heat inside the box.

If the rock is already hot, the heating consists of all the necessary heat from the air, which significantly shortens the time. If you need to enter the main heating element to keep it at sauna temperature, you will need a little more time than the normal 30 – 40 minutes. So, sit down, turn off the stove, set it to start in an hour or less, and turn it off.

The installation of a sauna heater requires more planning, from choosing a flammable floor tile to burning logs to get the temperature where it is needed.

The temperature I ended up sitting in was not fast or high, but later I realized that the warm-up time helped me because I did not waste the heat that was accumulating far above my head. The time it took to heat the room, and the temperature of the water in the sauna, as well as the time I had to warm up.

Harvia The Wall Sw90 9Kw Electric Sauna Heater Specifications

Do not assume that the predominance of wall and mounting units means that they are necessarily the best way. If you’re looking for something more exotic, take a look at some of the grey market heaters or check out the more “exotic” models. I would like to hear from readers who have brought a grey market heater and what their experiences have been.

There are 240 units in Europe and the selection is not much better than here, but some of them are worth it. European prices are generally higher than comparable certified North American models. If you are happy with the basic North American offerings, shop around and price the different brands and know that you will get pretty much the same from each of them. Some of the more exotic models, such as the Harvia the Wall SW90 9kW electric sauna heater, have a lot to offer.

Most European manufacturers slap a North American device on it afterwards and frankly, it doesn’t seem to work very well. Although these devices are not certified here, most brands are available in the USA and Europe.

This is understandable, as the vast majority of certified markets make uninspiring compromises designed to appeal to as many people as possible. This should be kept in mind in order to avoid the marketing hype that the manufacturers are generating there.

The Finlandia FLB-60 is a lower version of the Harvia the Wall SW90 with integrated control. Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed that the device shown above is actually a “Harvia Virta Combi,” as opposed to the standard version Hard road Virtual reality. We will learn more about this in a future post and look at the construction and the amenities available. Sources: 0, 1

Another thing to consider when using an outdoor sauna is that the water remaining in the combination tank could freeze in cold climates. It takes some time to heat it to a maximum of 300 cubic feet, so I would recommend it only for small rooms that need to be heated to low temperatures. This has a temperature range of -40 – 50 degrees Fahrenheit and a capacity of 1.5 – 2 gallons of water per hour.

Compare that to a typical electric box or wall heating system, most of which contain £44 of rock. I set this up by choosing a floor – a heater and a wall – with a capacity of 1.5-2 gallons of water per hour, containing 110 pounds of rock.

Note the amount of rock and take a look at the popular wood-burning stoves and fireplaces recommended for families – saunas the size of them. Wood burning is the traditional sauna stove from Scandinavia and it is the most attractive – it looks and requires most of the work to get going.
